Headload Prodigy™ Development

Darwin pointed to evolution and natural selection as the logical way forward. In some ways, this is how the Headload Prodigy™ came about.

Our primary goal in developing the Prodigy was to bring a more affordable version of the Headload™ to market. The Headload is a no-compromise load box for those that are lucky enough to live in a world where the word 'budget' does not exist. The Headload has a fully adjustable speaker level attenuator, multiple amp voicings, dual band EQ, headphone amp, a built-in Radial Phazer™ and two Radial JDX Reactor™ outputs. These features plus the amazing tone combine to crown it 'King of the Castle' when it comes to load boxes. But all of this comes at a cost.

When we began tinkering on the Prodigy, we had to make some hard decisions. What do you keep? What do you discard? In the end, we decided that for most players, being able to lower the signal level while driving their amp hard was the most important attribute. This would enable them to use their high-output amps in both the studio and on a live stage. We also wanted to be able to shut the amp sound off so that only the JDX signal could be heard. This would enable quiet recording for those that write late in the evening in an apartment building. It would also enable those that are playing on smaller stages to get great tone without having to carry their speaker cabinet to every gig.

Following the natural evolution, we kept some of the key features such as the JDX output and the dual-band EQ. For those that have tried the JDX, playing without it becomes nothing short of a disappointment. It is that good. Interestingly enough, the JDX sounds good for all kinds of musical genres including rock, metal and country and it works equally as well on bass as it does on guitar.

We then set it up with two extra guitar level outputs to enable multiple amps to be used on stage, to route additional effects, and experiment with parallel processing in the studio. A front panel volume was added for control, along with another volume knob for the headphones. Finally, we reduced the size of the Headload Prodigy so that it could be rack-mounted using an optional kit and two of them could be set side by side when running two amps.
